Gateway I Project

Gateway I Stormwater Retrofit Project

Construction Schedule

As of September 21, 2022:

Northeast Electric has begun trenching and installing conduit along the south side of the project site. They will continue working from west to east, and then will move to the north side of the project within the next couple of weeks.

Rotschy will be clearing vegetation and removing hard surfacing along the north side of the site over the next couple of weeks.

While hard surfacing may be removed from existing driveway entrances, the planned work should cause minimal interference with driveway access. Businesses along the south side of the road will be contacted individually to coordinate access as the work approaches their property frontage, if there will be any access limitations resulting from the work.

Background

The City Stormwater Utility received approximately $2.7 million through the Department of Ecology’s Water Quality Grant Program, to design and construct a stormwater treatment system and bicycle and pedestrian improvements along University Way. The project is about one mile in length, from Wenas Street to the Red Horse Diner. The project will construct rock lined swales behind the existing curb on both sides of the roadway. Surface water runoff will pass through new curb cuts into the swales, resulting in improved water quality in Mercer, Whiskey and Wilson Creeks. The swales will be lined with trees, which will improve air quality and create an attractive appearance along this gateway into the City of Ellensburg. The project will also construct two new bus pullouts near the Fish and Wildlife building, and provide recreational opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Project Impacts and Feedback

Some driveway entrances within the project area will be modified and residents and businesses will experience some disruptions during construction. We also know that residents and business owners may be aware of conditions and information that would be helpful to the City as construction progresses. Information can be shared via the survey link below.
