Have you heard about Gateway II but are wondering why you haven’t seen it yet? We are making progress! Although the Gateway II project has encountered numerous permitting and design challenges, the City team has worked very hard to overcome each obstacle, and is happy to report the project is still underway! Because of our continued efforts, the City was recently granted a project extension by Ecology. On January 28, 2026, Ecology accepted the 90% Design Package for Gateway II. We will apply for construction funding during the 2nd quarter of 2026 and anticipate construction to begin in 2028 (due to state funding cycles).
Much like Gateway I, the Gateway II Project includes the design and construction of a stormwater treatment system that incorporates a permeable-pavement bicycle and pedestrian pathway and rock-lined, bio-infiltration swales along a one-mile stretch of University Way from Vista Road to the eastern City Limits. Gateway II is designed to improve water quality in Lyle and Wilson Creeks, and the Yakima River. Stay tuned for more Gateway II updates as we near design completion!
