Citizen Cooperation
The Ellensburg Police Department recognizes that effective policing can only be achieved with the cooperation of the residents of the City of Ellensburg to ensure we live and work in a safe community. Our community is safest when citizens are involved and proactive in detection and prevention of crime. 

Therefore, our Community Program has many diverse and successful programs that have grown and expanded to train our citizens regarding crime and safety, while providing ways for citizens to easily communicate with the Police Department. 

The Department has used these programs to build relationships with its citizens, groups, and businesses in the community. We encourage you to use these programs to become involved in preventing crime and increase safety in our community.

Citizen’s Academy

The Citizen’s Academy is a program designed to provide participants with a working knowledge of the Ellensburg Police Department. It consists of classes and discussions where citizens learn about the duties and responsibilities of our department and the citizen’s role in the interaction of police and citizens over a series of six classroom meetings and field trips. In addition to helping citizens better understand the police department, it, in turn, helps the police department better understand the citizens and their concerns. 

Classes and Topics discussed at the Citizen’s Academy include:

  • EVOC - Driving Course
  • Use of Force - Classroom and Range
  • Criminal Law and Investigations
  • Patrol Procedures
  • K9 Demo
  • Jail Tour/KITTCOM Tour
  • Domestic Violence

Reserve's Academy

The Ellensburg Police Department re-established its Reserve Officer Program in the Spring of 2009. Reserve Officers have had a long history with the Ellensburg Police Department. The purpose of the Reserve Officer Program is to train and equip state-certified Reserve Officers to augment full-time officers for patrol duties.

Selected candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Skills in the operation and understanding of personal computers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to use sound judgment under stress.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation and polygraph exam.

National Night Out?

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out is the nation’s night out against crime.

National Night Out encourages:
  • Neighborhood Block Party
  • BBQ Social
  • Other outdoor events to build neighborhood spirit and unity
Research shows that when neighbors know each other and look out for each other crime goes down.

Ellensburg's National Night Out

Each year on the first Tuesday in August, this event is celebrated in communities throughout the United States. The Ellensburg Police Department has participated in National Night Out since 2008.

Our focus has been keeping our children safe where we have helped parents establish a child identification kit as well as providing safety tips and activities for children. We sponsor a free BBQ which is free to everyone.
